Family Sponsorship

As a country dedicated to family reunification, Canada offers a variety of immigration options that allow Canadian citizens or permanent residents to sponsor their family members to immigrate permanently to the country. Your relatives can live, study and work in Canada if they become permanent residents of Canada.

You can sponsor your parents, grandparents, spouse or common-law/ conjugal partner and dependent children (including adopted children) if you are:

A Canadian citizen or permanent resident
At least 18 years of age
Has filed a complete application to sponsor a member of the Family Class
Intends to fulfill the obligations in the sponsorship undertaking
Eligible to meet the Minimum Necessary Income threshold
Not a subject of removal order, convicted of certain criminal offences and not detained in any prison/ reformatory
Not an undischarged bankrupt
Not in receipt of any social assistance for a reason other than disability

In some specific instances, Canadian citizens or permanent residents may be eligible to sponsor their orphaned brother, sister, nephew/niece, or grandchild to come to Canada.

Applicants for permanent residence through a family sponsorship program must go through medical, criminal and security checks and submit their biometrics.
